hi, managed to make one of my junipers very sick, got too dry. Its foliage has gone all dry and looks on deaths doorstep. just want to ask if anybody has managed to get a juniper back from this stage and has any suggestions or should I just stop moping over it and chuck it out?
Thankyou
rose

Until it has stayed dead for the whole of next summer you should hang on. Generally some dies and some lives. With juni's that often leaves you with interesting deadwood opportunities.

Remove the dead stuff, and then I'd keep it in a place where it gets morning only sun, and then partial shade. Neither too dry nor too wet. Too much wet will harm it as there are no leaves to assist in transpiration, which will affect the roots.

Do you have any pics? I had a similar thing with a boulevard cypress. Lost all but two branches and it hurts! But there is still hope, if you have any green foliage it might just make it through the winter

See if I can get a pic up later, all the foliage has gone all wizened - its indoors in a unheated area of the house and only slightly watering it. Annoyed with myself as it was really healthy and sprouting all over a month or so ago.

Junipers shouldn't be kept indoors.

That was my first thought. How long has it been inside?

If you have a garden you should prepare a place for the tree to overwinter, if its very weak I have found adding a handfull of fresh castings into the medium really increases their odds. Look for a nice sheltered spot with partial shade, work an area three times the root ball until its loose and pliable especially underneath where you do not want wet feet.
You can amend the soil with perlite/DE/etc but its not usually necessary if you have a decent amount of organic matter in your soil, heavily mulch in with a decent leaf mould and forget about her. She will be smiling at you this spring and there will be a tonne of new root starts, worms will pllow through the mulch and create an ideal rootzone.

I am finding it rare for a Juniper outdoors (round here anyway) to dry out too much. Its more of a problem for them to get too wet and suffer root rot. We have quite a wet climate though.

If it has been inside and dried out then I would just stick it outside, water it and wait and see.

Thanks for the further thoughts, only just brought it in since it looked sick to a bench in the unheated utility area, we've been getting a lot of rain and the nights are getting cold so thought it might help. I'll see if there's a place outdoors it could be planted out, thanks for the details, M.T.M. Although it's probably too wet here in the winter....hummm
