What does this tree look like now 18 months have passed?
Corin Tomlinson's work on a 45 year old pine, transforming a neglected tree into a stunning bonsai in just over three hours.

Mixed opinions in the comments section. While I do think the final image is beatiful, it did hurt to see the majority of the tree chopped off. Would love to see how it looks now.

gotta say, i think some of the comments are a little OTT. to my eye, the tree looked ordinary at first, just a bush, nothing special. the styling transformed it into a tree full of drama, a tree on the edge, its very convincing, its dynamic. it actually has the look of a high mountain tree, battered by the elements, but still thriving. outstanding styling IMHO

think you can only appreciate the styling when you've studied many trees from such environments as the image is portraying, it looks a lot like this image on bonsai4me website, but even more dramatic. nailed it

I was at that demo live and I didn't really like the result which looked awkward and unbalanced to me and to everyone else from the bonsai club I went with (any many I've spoken to since). The reason behind the chop was a large very straight section of trunk that didn't work and the decision was therefore that it had to go and would never make a high quality tree if it stayed. That may well be true - sometimes you have to destroy a good tree to rebuild a great tree - and a few more years styling of the resultant tree may produce something very nice. One of the posters suggested the tree had died which of course would make it a failure but if it has lived it might be looking a little different now.

I love the finished tree. The comments are ridiculous, people literally starting off by saying they have no bonsai experience and then going on to criticise the work. Demos are tough because people want a 'finished' tree after a couple of hours, when realistically you want to do it over a couple of years, but I like that the dramatic look at the end, a million times better than the bush it started off as

From the comments here (YouTube comments are rarely worth reading so I didn't) I expected to hate it. I generally prefer more natural looking trees. This one looks great after that work though! It was nice before, but a bit boring.

I think it is epic. I looked first at the result and then only the demo. Completely changes the way you understand the tree. Corin has amazing vision and he delivered.

Hi guys to be honest I'm not impressed with what was done to the tree I think there's a bit of contradiction in it with the foliage on the left of the tree being wired down to the left when the tree is supposed to be a wind swept tree so all the twigs should be going from left to right and I don't like how the two branches on the right of the tree open out from each other only to curve back towards each other a bit like a catapult. I'm sure that with time the tree will improve but it's not for me. Sorry Corin.
Cheers Nigel.

Won't those bark stripped branches just rot and fall away?

It's pine so it quite slow to rot and also it'll be treated which means it can last many years if looked after.
