I have a Beech group still quite young trees and noticed the leaves getting paler a few weeks back. Unfortunately my Father in Law passed away around the same time so obviously my trees took a back seat since. Things have settled down at home now and today I was checking my trees and noticed this group had started to look like it was taking on it's Autumn colours Untitled by Keith, on Flickr Untitled by Keith, on FlickrNothing unusual I thought as it has been getting cooler up here in Scotland. What worried was that the brown leaves were very crispy as were the paler yellow leaves, the leaves were also curling in. I had a good look and eventually found a small grub inside one of the leaves I only found the one. Any idea what it is and should I be worried? tbh I don't know - but the grub looks like if it were doing damage it would be eating chunks from leaves - very unlikely IMO that a grub or group of grubs would affect leaves that way and all the leaves that way. I suspect this is Autumn for you - lots of people have been discussing it recently. Down south the weather is still good but if it's colder where you are maybe that's the case. Even if it's something else I suspect when the leaves fall the problem will go with it. If you're nervous burn them all, and either way you'll find out for sure next spring. If you're very nervous spray with a systemic. If it was mine I'd let the leaves fall and forget about it. Maybe someone else will have an alternative idea. |

I have been unable to positively identify the bug but I think that it is unlikely to be responsible for the brown leaves. Many of us are experiencing early Autumnal changes this year. |

I agree with Stymie, all of my hornbeam are looking much the same as above............. it's an early Autumn again this year as the weather has been all over the place |

I've had a similar problem with a few of my Beech including my large yamadori which was defoliated a and never threw out a new flush of leaves. The concenus with that one seems to be that it on it's way out. But, ever hopeful I'm not touching it, hopeing the next year will bring out some new growth. A number of smaller Beech are also showing signs of early shut down including, on one or two, curling leaves. MY Hornbeam seem to be ol at the moments. So it's fingers crossed. Paul, any feedback from Amelia about the white powder under the bark on the Beech? Grant |

On a good growing year my beech hedges can need up to three cut backs but this year it has been two, with shorter growth. One hedge is starting to show its autumn colours. The other hedge and the copper beech tree are still in their summer clothes. At the beginning of this year I bought a bare rooted small Beech, which seemed to take forever to come out. The leaves have now gone brown and shrivelled so I am hoping this is early autumn and not the death nail. |

I have hardly had to water my trees for a few months now only the smaller ones have looked like they were drying out so that could be the issue Bill. It's been a poor Summer up here. Thanks for all the comments guys hopefully it's just been a bad year for Beech, sounds like it's not just me getting an early Autumn |

Nothing to worry about- just early onset of autumn colours! The grub is a beneficial Hoverfly larva which feeds on aphids so hopefully you didnt squash it!! |
