I am back after a well deserved break. It's always a worry to go away and leave behind my trees in the hands of a kind person who accepts to water them. Most years, nothing too bad happens. However, this year, it does look like they some got a bit "thirsty"... I am told that they've been all watered daily until the water runs from the bottom of the pot "exactly as you said" but it does sound odd that three show such signs of suffering. Hopefully there won't be too much long lasting damage. What do you think?

Second tree... A wild prunus. Leaves with discolorations and edges damaged. One new shot was totally dead. |

I reckon you should be ok. Some deciduous leaves are starting to look a bit tired now anyway. |

I'm sure they'll recover but sadly even well meaning friends and relatives don't follow instructions to the letter. One really hot day and the trees can hit a crisis. I've left mine with my adult sons and it's been ok but often the soil is disturbed from over strong watering. |

My thoughts go along with Smithy too. I have been remarking about the early onset of Autumn this year. I have similar Crataegus, Carpinus betulus and two Nothofagus antarctica with many yellow leaves. The Prunus avium in the ground is showing brown edges to the leaves along with various other naturally growing garden trees. |

Looking at the weeds and especially moss in the pots, I reckon those have been well watered. |

Unfortunately I am in the same boat as you. 1 week away & I have 5 of my smaller trees in a state of stress. I find it so frustrating having explained in great detail how to water them & they know how important they are to me. I took better care of their precious tomato plants while they were away for 2 weeks then they did for my trees . Hopefully the trees are slowing down abit now & should make a full recovery but I'm still a little peeved

I would suggest investing in a simple watering system. We have been away a lot this year, sometimes for weeks at a time, and although my neighbour is excellent, it seemed unfair to ask her to keep an eye and water my trees for such a long time. Have a look at this thread viewtopic.php?f=5&t=15129 The system I set up was simple and worked brilliantly - not one tree lost or even showing signs of stress. On the contrary they all look lush and healthy, more so than when I water by hand, so I have increased my hand watering to morning and evening during this hot weather. |

The hawthorn looks as though it has been watered on the leaves - as well as the base.Hence some of the leaves look a bit mouldy. It will grow back fine next season, but cut off old or brown leaves and dispose. |
