Post subject:  NEEDLE CAST!!!

Hi folks

I have discovered banding on my scotts pine and i'm pretty confident its needle cast, I'm having problems finding a treatment for it, as nowhere sells decent copper treatments or Bordeaux mix (as far as i can see)

Does anyone have a source for an appropriate fungicide or any advice, if so I'd be grateful

Cheers
Lee

Cupric sulphate is the main ingredient of the Bordeaux formula. I usually get some of that and have used it alone.

When making Bordeaux Fungicide I mix 3 or 4 tablespoons of copper sulphate and 10 tablespoons of hydrated lime and shake the mixture thoroughly before using it. Try to get fresh lime . The homemade Bordeaux mixture is best used the day you prepare it. After spraying make sure you rinse the preparation out of your sprayer with plenty of water, since it can cause damage if left in.

Hi
Needle Cast is a rather generic term covering a wide range of diseases which might not all be cured by dosing with Bordeaux Mixture!!
Can you post a photo showing close up of symptoms?
Hope its not Red Band Needle Blight (AKA Dothistroma Blight)which has become a serious quarantine pest in commercial forestry in UK

Thanks stymie...do you use hydrated lime also?

I have found dithane 945 which I think is 80% mancozeb which may be an option also from what I have read.

Also I'm wondering if a lime sulphur solution may be useful in the meantime?

I gave my formula above. Be aware that neither Mancozeb nor the Bordeaux mixture are systemic so they need to get into contact with all parts of the plant. The addition of a drop of detergent helps to get to all parts and counteracts any waterproof tendencies.

If a valuable bonsai is infected, get it away from other needle trees. The browned ends of needles may be cut off well into the unaffected green and collected in some kind of container which can be burnt along with its contents. This will be quite time consuming and unimportant infected stock should be completely incinerated for easier control. The scissors used for trimming must be disinfected before using them on any other plants and disposal of the infected needle ends must be complete as any finding their way into compost will spread the trouble.

The article does mention copper fungicide, I'll try and post a pic later. There are small brown red bands at the moment but nothing as severe as the images from the article

Stymie thanks for the info

from what i have read, copper based treatments stop spore development so are effective as a preventative but wont do anything to help at this stage. i would focus on finding a systemic that works for the particular infection, if there is one. fwiw i used one of the common fungicide brands for this a few years back and it seemed to do the trick, but it could have been a different pathogen so who knows if it would work for you ::dunno:

Hi Bill, I gave it a dose of roseclear ultra today as a just in case, it it supposed to treat rust so thought id give that a try while i'm waiting for some mancozeb, ......when it does come would it not be worth removing the infected needles and treating now?

Hey, sorry not been around much lately...
i have no idea about mancozeb man, it is non-systemic so i can't see how it could cure this infection if it can't penetrate throughout the tree. it might make it much less likely that the tree will get reinfected next year though, so could be well worth doing.

Cheers Bill, yeah its just a preventative like bordeux and daconil, chances are its not going to make too much difference if this rain persists lol, ill try and spray when dry to protect the buds for next year, best I can do really
