Although I enjoy my more mature trees I also enjoy trying to grow from scratch. This gives free product to learn with but obviously takes a long time to fruition. I bought 2 Azaleas from Lee this year and one had flowers which went from red , through variegated colours to white flowers. Pruned this after flowering in july and planted about 25 cuttings , currently have about 20 which have survived. Also got 2 deshojo cuttings which are growing well. These were taken in June time. Also took cuttings from my dwarf jade tree and these took very easily. All cuttings were in pots with polythene bags over them to keep the moisture and these were also in a plastic greenhouse which gives extra warmth along with the humidity. An old Chinese proverb says "Man who grows from seeds and cuttings has mostly mame or shohin sized trees". Good fun nevertheless. |

Hi Gary , yes it is a long process particularly if you do not feed excessively and force the growth. the 2 maples below are both from cuttings, prior to understanding how to force faster growth. The larger of the 2 is about 18 inches tall and 20 years old. I'm the same, Richard, I love starting from cuttings/seeds. What's the rush if you enjoy each stage :). This year from cuttings I've successfully rooted Japanese and trident maples, plenty of cotoneaster (loads of them actually!), and Jaquelline Hillier elm. Hope they all flourish, mate, and keep us updated |
