Hi folks, another £3 juniper thread. Got it in may. This one was lying on its side at the back of the shelf. All I've done is pot it upright and wire the branches down.

I was initially happy with the way it looked and was going for a formal upright with a Jin apex. But now the more I look at it the more it bores me, it just doesn't look like it will ever be convincing.

I'm trying to think Of what to do with it in the spring, what would you do if it were yours?

Probably not the best person to reply but it reminds me of this .

Right idea, wrong height?

Shorten it. Pick a new leader lower down, do the chop.

Suddenly it might be what you had in mind?

The round pot definitely suits best! Thanks.

You know what? You are so right, that would give it the taper it's missing and the proportions would be much better. That thick branch has to go too to keep in scale. Maybe I could use that as the leader.

This is realistically as low as I can go I think and still have branches left, Pretty happy with that.

I think that's exactly where you should chop, instantly looks 100% better. Ultimately you'll want to get it into something more free draining too, but for £3 it'll be a lovely little tree!

If that's where you want to chop it to then don't chop it yet.

Keep the top long for now, but wire the new leader up and use the existing trunk to brace it.

Juni's need loads of foliage to grow, and keeping the top longer for a season while the wiring sets can't harm it in any way.

If you have already repotted this one then you might want to change the soil you have used, as it looks to be standard nursery soil? You should consider using more free draining soil, especially with a juni. As it has had one repotting a second one now will have little additional adverse impact, I think.

I'd gently wash the top half of the rootball and then I'd fill the top of the pot carefully with better soil. If the top of the pot has better soil you should find that the tree puts out fibrous roots into that part of the pot. This will be beneficial for when you want to reduce the size of the rootball later on. If you do try this then just make sure you remove any airpockets when you add the new soil.

I'd just use cat litter, personally.

Thanks for the info, yes as I said in the OP i won't be doing anything to it until spring and it has already been put in cat litter since this pic was taken in may when I first got it and styled it.

Thanks again for the tips :)

FWIW I agree with the above. A lower chop as in the virt will give you the best chance of something nice looking fairly quickly.

you could use that long trunk for leverage to create a gentle curve in the lower trunk, with the goal of eventually cutting back to the first branch to give you the next bend. fwiw, you would be looking at about 5 seasons to get there, all going well.
