Hey folks,

I posted on here a month ago asking for advice on a couple of trees I have, thanks for the advice and I've been in contact with my local Bonsai club and will be attending the next meeting where they have a workshop. :smallthumb:

I tried to talk my other half into the 2 1/2 hour journey to the car boot sale that was posted in the general forum however she wasn't overly enthusiastic about it so it was off to the local garden centre where I spotted this Cedrus Deodara "Golden Horizon".

I thought it may give me an opportunity to practice my wiring etc and at £10 I thought it represented some value. Having looked online I know it's not the most popular Cedrus for Bonsai but as I say, more for practice.

I'm going to take it to the workshop (29th August) however is there anything anyone would advise doing to it in the meantime or just leave it be?

It's getting rather addictive this!

Let it get used to its new surroundings for a month and see what suggestions are given at the workshop before making any alterations to this.
I know of no reason to suggest that Deodars are not suitable for bonsai. Their natural drooping habit should be made full use of.

Nice find.

The complete lack of any branches "underneath" the long trunk is very interesting. It suggests great age.

I think there's something rather special that could come out of this tree.

Thanks Stymie, I think the thing I'm learning the most at the moment is patience!

Brendan - that's a very unusual concept although probably outwith my limited ability at the moment, thanks for posting.

I agree with Don - you'll probably get bombarded with ideas at the workshop so take your pick there and have fun. We await your post workshop pictures in anticipation.

I have one of these in a John Pitt crescent pot. Funny enough it was for sale at the boot sale Sunday. But for a bit for than £10.

They are not easy but can defiantly be enjoyable.

Excited to see what the workshop suggest! There are some nice semi cascade deodars on google images. Looks like it will be a lot of fun working with this tree

Can anyone offer any advice on general pruning and maintenance on this tree? Whilst I went to the last workshop I had more pressing issues so didn't get round to asking for any advice on it.

I've looked online but can't find much info about it.

At this moment I've wired down the main branch trying to achieve a cascade but haven't done much else.

Bonsai4me says
Quote:
Pruning: Pinch back new shoots throughout the growing season. Hard prune in Autumn to avoid bleeding. Pruning scars heal very slowly, if removing branches, stubs can be left to Jin.
