I was in the Bedgebury Pinetum yesterday and spotted this small oak leaf on a Quercus microphylla. If it is naturally a small leaf oak and the leaves are about 1 - 3 inches at most. If I subjected it to a bit of leaf reduction work it cold be a cracking species. Anyone have one, or any ideas where to get one - or even a few acorns? I'll go back to try and get a few acorns later in the year anyway. 20170618_152810 by BrendanR2012, on Flickr 20170618_152815 by BrendanR2012, on Flickr

No, but I have noticed Graham Potter has been pushing several interesting varieties such as Suber, Ilex and the Portuguese. He has some amazing Portuguese on the website. I think Oak is a surprisingly large genus, and may be worth trying more varieties. |

I'd google it to see if there's any bonsai of this type before you buy - there's usually a good reason if there's none / v few on t'interweb. |

Hi Paul I googled it plenty - I think it is simply scarcity of the variety. It is growing happily outdoors in Kent with no protection in the pinetum. It is native to north mexico, so the climate here will not pose any problems. Now I really want to get my hands on one! Maybe the pinetum willl let me take a layer? And some acorns? |

i have collected over 100 acorns from one tree in the past and every one of the small trees was different in some way .. leaf size and shapes were different ,growth habits were different some tall some bushy ,some with knobbly bark some not , some were vigorous growth some were like runts of the litter and two were albino .i am beginning to think oaks are individuals and some are good for bonsai some not ..i plant 100 acorns every year and pick the best ones.. and no one minds you collecting acorns |

I thought the Burr Oak was Quercus Macrocarpa? Not heard of Microphylla before, don't recognise the name at all. Might be worth double checking if you order acorns or saplings |

I just had a call from the Collections Manager at Bedgebury, replying to an email query I sent them about their tree. They were given 2 - 3 of these by a retiring tree collector who got them at 2000m elevation in Mexico. Unsurprisingly they can't say whether there's a UK supplier. BUT - I can do an airlayer of their tree with their blessing! So advice please. When to start it? They are relaxed. Also, if I do a layer it will need to be quite capable of surviving between waterings, as I cannot check on it too often. So suggestions for water retention etc appreciated. |

use rock wool as it will hold enough water for a month at a time |

I would now wait until next spring, Brendan. Its a bit late in the season now so you probably wont see results until next year anyway. |
