Post subject:  What to do with this?

I got this free this weekend from a fellow weetreeer. Looks like a cypress of some sort but I don't exactly what. There are two main very upright trunks and a lot of low shoots around the back. The foliage is very sparse, a long way from the trunk but where it is, it seems healthy and strong. I didn't think this sort of tree would back bud much but the second photo shows new growth from a crotch which is promising.

So what do I do? The design I have in mind at this stage is to jin the tops of the main trunks and remove the low shoots heading towards a twin trunk upright literati style.

1) Leave it alone and hope it buds and grows all over giving me a lot to work with next year.
2) Use the healthy growth from the low shoots to graft close in on the existing branches.
3) Be informed "this is not good for Bonsai" and find another use for it. (like when a dog goes to a kennel in the country)

Thoughts and advice welcome.

I was feeling that instinctively. Good to hear someone say it. I don't want to waste time on a lost cause.

I'd agree, don't waste your time on it.

It looks like a Leylandii. I would just dump it, as there have been many instances of these being planted in gardens and turning into monsters.

I think there's a common agreement going on here!

Switch from photobucket to flickr. Much easier to see the detail.

I think leylandii or thuja - both are pretty hard to use.

BUT this is a candidate for a literati that could actually be good enough to warrant the effort. I'd try. Slowly slowly get rid of the unwanted trunks and then as the associated roots die back remove them and gradually reduce the pot size. If it is thuja it will resent losing trunks and roots so this is a process over a couple or three years. But as a back of bench project, why not?

i think thats a thuja gary, i have one myself and i would not recommend them. really really slow top growth, rough loose foliage.

Don't feel too bad about it Gary. I made the same mistake just over two years ago, although mine cost more. I actually bought it for the trunk, then realised my mistake.
