Post subject:  What to do with dead bonsai ?

Hi everyone. I have a bit of an unusal question.
I have my first tree, but my boyfriend killed his a while ago.
It was a very nice tree once by the look of what is left!
Its attractive ( i think ) and has been collecting dust and cob webbs for a while! Which i cleaned off yesterday.
I was wondering would it be possible to grow something around the tree?

This is the tree. Just think its a shame not to do something with it.
I suspect it died from lack of water as he wouldnt of kept it properly !
Sorry the picture isnt very good its bigger than what it looks.

Any help or ideas would be great
Thanks
Tifa

Hiya.

could always clean the cobwebs out of the boyfriend with the spikey bits..... :07hysterical:

Shame, it looks like a nice tree (from the teeney pic). A dead tree could be used as part of a big group/landscape planting. The other potential option is to use what bit of the trunk you like and wrap a whip round it ( a small living shoot of something vigorous growing ) so - in time- there is a new living tree growing around the established dead tree, adding years to the young plant.... but will take a lot of planning and advice.

Bottom line - don't bin it, there will be something that you can use this for, as long as you have the patience to develop the eye for what, when and where

:07hysterical: Thats SO funny !! Yeah i dont want to throw it away at all. He's given it to me so i can do something with it.
I was wodering if there was something suitable i could grow around it as in, on it? Its prob alot for me to do as im new to bonsai but not to growing plants etc. But im not sure what exactly. If you have any ideas id love to hear them. Also have a smaller one hes killed off collecting dust too ! :07hysterical: You know every time i look at it now, im going to laugh!

Would a bigger pic of it help? i dont what the pic restriction size is? im using photobucket to resize?

thanks for your help, and making me laugh!

Tifa, if you have your pictures on photobucket you don't need to resize - you should be able to just add a link that will make your pictures show in the thread.

Perhaps you could use your knowledge of plants to get a cutting of something with small leaves such as lonicera nitida, escallonia or cotoneaster, (or even spirea?). Plant it near the base of the dead tree trunk and encourage it to grow up and round the trunk. Encourage the side shots to grow out like branches. You might get an interesting and unique type of bonsai tree. Worth a try - it can't get any worse :smallthumb:

A small ivy might be encouraged to climb on its own...

Great idea! Thanks! Ive taken another pic and havent resized it but i think this is too big! Sorry !
Do you think i will need a bigger pot at all ? There is not alot of space between the roots of the dead tree and the large rock.
Will also take before and after pictures!

Thanks again

Looking at the Bigger Picture (sorry I couldn't resist the pun ) Any plan to re-use the trunk as deadwood will also involve recycling the pot and the rock... but all in seperate locations. I'd guess that part of the original trees problem was being planted on a tablespoon of soil in a very shallow pot with a piece of rock stuffed in there for no good reason. If you decide to re-use the deadwood then you can chop it up as required for the new design, the rock might or might not play a part at the end of the process, unless you want to start a root over rock planting, in which case the rock will form part of the early stages.

whatever you opt for don't hang on to the image of the sadly departed, all it is now is material for a new creation.

Nice crackle glaze pot though if you can get that lump of rock out.

: I got myself a woodburner, just in case,, however if you have a reptile shop near you im sure it would come in handy.

Those rocks are often cemented in to the pots...so probably not going anywhere...
