A few of my trees seem to have perished this spring. Mostly smaller elms but a small privet and a pyracantha as well. All established trees. Most trees have survived of course but as a percentage it's high for me to lose 6 or 7 trees in spring as most years I lose none or maybe one. There's been quite a bit of die back as well on medium and larger trees, particularly birch and also willow. No obvious reasons connected with changes in my practice. A friend said this was a bad year for everyone due to hot weather last summer and a colder winter. Is this everyone else's experience? |

I have had the same problem Gary, several trees that I have had for years just haven't woken up. I am worried for my big hawthorn, it's covered in buds but nothing is happening. Several other smaller hawthorn I have are in full leaf and flower. Also lost a few branches on my Siberian elm, cork bark elm, Big Larch and hornbeam. All have been fine in worse Winters than the last few years....... it's been a funny time, weather wise. |

I have lost more than ever before, too, Gary. For no obvious reason apart from the weather. And I have heard so many people saying that their previously bomb proof Ch Elms have not woken up |

I am waiting for a Nothofagus to wake up, but it may have perished. Some buds may, or may not, be moving, but its not looking good. My field maple looks to be a gonner, too, but thats more a case of too much root being removed rather than winter conditions. We had some very cold nights last winter. Add to that a very wet climate, and its a recipe for disaster. |

Yes, I've lost around half my Chinese elms all of which have survived winters outdoors before, two out of three olives and both rosemaries. Lost quite a few branches on a collected silver birch raft too, and all the leaves on a normally evergreen cotoneaster are shrivelled and brown. Don't think that's made it either, but I'm playing a waiting game with that one. Other stuff is absolutely romping away. |

Yeah. I've noticed that my losses are slightly higher %age wise amongst trees I repotted this year. Some of them have buds that have died. My repotting usually works fine so it's not awful technique!. I do wonder if under stressful conditions repotting has just tipped one or two over the edge. In this country we do tend to repot a little early to avoid a spring rush and just possibly this is one small factor at play here. |

I've lost one tree this year, A Chelm from Morrisons that I bought in 2018, It was just coming along nicely too Sorry about the blurry pic, I seem great at taking blurry pics!! I've three more larger ones that have come through fine and are all almost fully in leaf! John.. |

Its definitely been the worst winter for losses for me since I started 15 years ago. Ive lost several hardy Fuchsia which were over 10 years old , a young collected Oak, a Potentilla and also my Acer palmatum Deshojo in the ground is barely alive, though strangely all my other Acers are looking good. Chinese Elm all survived unscathed. I think most of the damage was caused by the prolonged freeze we had before Xmas , then several late frosts this spring- lets hope we dont get any more now! |
