Post subject:  Getting a quince to flower

Some years back my wife bought me a quince (Cydonia) for my birthday from a well known bonsai nursery in Surrey. It grows well and looks good owing to the very chunky trunk but it has only flowered once since. Any suggestions as to how to persuade it to give a more regular display?

What time of year do you normally prune it?

Spring after the first flush of growth including removing most of the previous years extension growth which I leave assuming it should flower on that like my full sized one does.

I would leave it for a whole 12 months and see when it flowers and on which parts of the tree. That will give you a guideline of when and how to prune it in the future.

So here it is with all of last years growth still in place. Obviously looks very overgrown as the extension growth is around 200-300mm long.
Excuse the mess but the storm destroyed my Bonsai bench.

Could you try and get a better quality picture on? That one is very blurry.

Have a look at this thread where I have explained how to use imgbb to get your photos into a post. It’s very straightforward.

Interestingly it won’t let me upload a second image…..the first one is just under 8mb so below their limit.

Anyway you can see the long extension growth from last year doesn’t seem to have any flower buds just emerging leaves although it’s a little too early to be certain. I need to remove it all this year to keep it looking good. Is it possible I need to create short fruiting spurs like some apple trees need? In which case I could cut all the growth back to a couple of buds and remove this years growth back to these at the end of the year?
