This appears to be a grafted tree- you can see the union on the main trunk.
Can you post photos showing views of the whole tree ?

If it is grafted then that will help root development.

Should I remove any of the top growth, or will it all help to set new roots?

For me if the top growth doesn't create a stability problem I would leave it the first year and let the root system establish, which is the priority. Next year it will need to come down to about where the labels are.

Yesterday whilst walking through our local market I noticed 5 barefooted Green Beech in a pot for £7.50. They looked good but when I got them home and had a look they were all buried deep in the pot so the branches started high for a forest group, which was my intention.

I'm going to make a decision in spring, once I know they are going to wake up, whether to carry on with a group planting or try for a clump instead. If going for a group I might ground layer in the plant pot then attempt the following year.

I've heard beech can be problematic, in throwing out any new buds from older wood. Your plan may be difficult.

I too have heard something similar but I've got nothing to loose.

Years ago I ordered ten Acer palmatums bare rooted off fleabay, They arrived in a very long and narrow jiffy bag, They landed whilst I was at work, The missus opened them by cutting the sealed end off with scissors! :202thumbdown:

Trouble was that they were too tall for the jiffy bag so they folded the tops over, They were very thin and folded probably with no detrement, The wife actually cut them in to bits and was really upset when she gave me the news!!
