Is it to early to put 2yr old potted Larch into the ground ? ( some are already starting to break buds)
Would you bareroot them first.

You can plant now. I wouldn't bare-root, but maybe disentangle roots gently to spread them out a bit and improve the future nebari. Consider planting over a tile etc so the roots go laterally rather than down.

If you do plant out just remember you may have to cover with fleece, as I am sure that we will eventually get some of the white stuff and solid soils if frozen for days

There is no point in planting a tree in the ground if you don't first get the roots off to a proper start.

All that will happen is the badly placed roots will thicken and become even more of a headache in the future. Really badly placed roots can prevent an otherwise decent trunk to be quite unsuitable for bonsai.

So I'd make absolutely certain the roots are well placed and spread out - ideally on a tile - when you plant it out. That may mean bare-rooting it. On a 2 year old larch you will need to be careful to avoid damaging the roots. But equally it is young and vigorous, so the risk is propably worth the reward.

I would wait until the frosts are behind us. Even if it breaks bud and leafs out you can safely plant it out at a later date.

If the roots took a bit of a hammering when you prepared it for the ground just make sure you secure it firmly in the ground - stake it very well. Swayng in the wind will cause new roots to snap.

And if the roots are slightly compromised then all you need to do is make sure it is well watered until they re-establish. In the period after bud break and while the leaves are hardening off right until the tree in full canopy the roots are basically just gathering water for the leaves.

Larch are probably one of the most cold tolerant species for Bonsai...
