Post subject:  Potting to a larger pot

Hello all,

I have a couple of trees that I want to put in bigger pots and grow out. Do I leave the roots alone when I re-pot?

Thanks

I usually rake out some of the rootball especially if it's solid, so that the outermost roots can start straight away into new space. This way also there's less of a transition if the new soil is slightly different.

As john said above. If you have good healthy roots and tree it's always worth considering how you can benefit the nebari in the later life of the tree. Consider how you position the roots as you repot and if there are any downward growing roots in the middle take these back to the stump If quality of other roots allow.

Thank you.

I agree with the others. If you have any circling roots, trimming these back will stimulate new root growth into the space. Its good to leave the majority of roots in place but the circling ones, the ones forming a mat on the base and and big downwards ones are best removed. tbh if you lift them out of the pots and you don't have circling roots or a matted base then you don't really need to pot up anyway at this point.
