Post subject:  Best time to take maple and crab apple cuttings

Hi everyone, we've recently migrated to the UK from Australia. I had to sell my collection and am wanting to startup again. Been scouring the hedgerows around my work place and the woods on the factory grounds for yamadori and material to layer come springtime. In my garden is a beautiful cutleaf maple and crab apple that I want to take cuttings of. When would be the best time to take hard wood cuttings and what medium would be available and good to use in the UK conditions.
Thanks for any advice.
Kind regards PeterB

once the leaves have hardened off in late march early april. I use akadama for my cuttings with an incubator to protect them when I first plant them... I'm going to introduce a heat mat this coming spring.

Where did you move to? Is says you joined in June 2015 ad this is your first post, you been lurking for this long??

You could air layer them? Better chance of survival, and you can start as soon as the leaf buds start swelling in feb/mar.

Feb/Mar is a bit too early for air layers in the UK. The tree has to be active so early May is better here

Both of those should airlayer well and if you have them in your garden there’s no problem with access.

Howdy, we moved to Sherborne, Dorset in August. Arrived in the UK in July. Am a member of ausbonsai in OZ, so when we lived in OZ I used to post in ausbonsai. Followed wee trees but because I had no knowledge of UK conditions etc, just looked and learned. That way you don't put your foot in it
