Hello all,

I hope everyone is well :smallthumb:

Some of you may remember that I tried growing Japanese Maples from seeds purchased online out of season.... didn't go very well, but some new updates on this shortly ;-)

I was told this would be the right time of year to begin gathering some seeds from various trees. I have a really nice park near me with a lot of amazing oak trees, pine trees and some other trees that I don't know much about.

I'm mainly focused on gathering the acorns from the oak trees, any advice? If anyone can point me in the direction of some good seeds for Japanese Maples I would be very grateful.

Thank you! :hatoff:

Acorns about 1 1/2 inches deep on their side. Check for any grub holes first. Good luck.

If you live in an area with wood pigeons, squirrels , jays or some other species you may need to protect your pots to avoid losing your acorns. I now propagate my acorns indoors between wet kitchen roll to avoid the risk as I lost so many in the past.

Last year I planted 10 english oak acorns, and the grand total of them that germinated was zero. Does anyone know how cold they have to get to stratify, and for how long?

acorns are best planted fresh with no need to stratify.
they must never be alowed to dry out

Ah ok. Thanks Oakrod, I bet that's what happened then.

I'll get some more this year from northern spain later this month, there are a lot of English oaks there and the climate is more like UK.
Of course they don't call them English oak here, just oak. "Roble"

Will be interested to see what you collect! Take pics of trees/leaves and their seeds that you don't recognise.. folks here will probably be able to identify them.
You could try to use google Lens but I've found it to be a bit hit&miss with some plants/leaves.

i posted on here before about my struggle to get japanese maple seeds to germinate, with stratification, etc. so in the end all i did was wait for the seeds to fall from the trees, gather them, and stick them in big pots or containers. left them outdoors, and bingo, in the first proper year i used this 'method', had over a hundred germinate.the seeds came from my own trees, plus any in communal areas, we have one in the garden of a nearby doctors surgery for example.

just ape what nature does, it seems to work!.

I thought I'd see if I can find out if there's any data on what trees grow in public spaces near me with the intention of gathering some seeds. Turns out there's a couple of good resources for London boroughs, firstly a spreadsheet with species and longitude/latitude, and secondly an interactive map. Pretty cool.
