evening all, Hoping you could help and give me some guidance I was recently given a bonsai from a friend after he was killing it sadly they didn't know which tree it was as it was brought from a high street chain. I currently own one myself which is growing well but the new one looking a bit brown and dead if im honest. Tried watering it similar pattern I follow with mine but the soil seems extremely wet. Leaves are either light shade of green or dark shade of brown. There also a brown mud like contents at the bottom (not the soil itself) It be great if I could get some advice, I rather not throw it away as im new to this and like a challenge Ive taken some picture below to help http://imgur.com/a/xjui2 thank you for your help |

I think this is dead, the mud like contents could be root rot from over watering. Try scratching some bark from different areas. |

Ill check this in the morning but thank you for the advice. I normally water my other plant by soaking the roots in water for about 10 mins once a week maybe twice if the weather on the hot side. I normally also have it on a south facing window is this fine? |

I think this may be dead also. It does not look good, the leaves are most certainly not doing anything, trees have come back after some TLC but this may be too late. |

cheers guy guess I may have to get rid then sadly, thought I may be able to save due to the few remaining green leafs I normally soak my tree in waters for 10 minutes on a weekly basis unless the weather on the hot side, then placed on a south facing window unless we having a heat wave, im guessing this is ok as my tree been doing ok? Thank you again for the help |

Thank you again for the help Immersing a tree in water isn't good practice. Much better to water it from above. Trees as a rule don't thrive indoors, although ch elm can do OK in favorable conditions. If you're going to get into bonsai more then it's really advantageous if you have an outdoor space where you can grow trees properly. The UK isn't the sunniest of places and even a south facing window can reduce light levels (to the tree) by 50%. Add to this central heating and lack of humidity and you can see how a tree would struggle to thrive. What is the name of your tree - do you know? |

Pick a little bark off with your finger nail low down on the trunk, can you see any green? |

Thank you for the replies, greatly appreciated. Thank you for the advice on watering, I was informed from the guy who I brought at a stall during an event soaking would be best but i will stop this and use the tray or watering from top. Sadly outside space is unavailable for me to use but im to tight to use heating and will always keep the window open around the bonsai. I've checked the bark there a hint of green but no where near the color of grass (picture should be on first link) Regarding what tree it is I don't know neither of my trees name I thought my fully life tree was a elm but not 100% sure (attached picture on 1st and 2nd link if someone could help that be great) should I be worried about the discoloured leafs? http://imgur.com/a/J4eDH http://imgur.com/e313rbY |
