Hi all

Does anyone out there have a pistachio tree? Just after any tips that may come in useful for my tree.

Regards

Jason

Jason,
I have had a Pistachio for a few years now.
Advice - don't let it dry out and keep it in greenhouse over winter if possible.
If they get too cold they will drop their leaves, also if they dry out

Good Luck

Hi Graham

Thanks for the advice. I was beginning to think I was the only person on here with a pistachio tree!

I have been trying to decide whether Pistachio is deciduous or evergreen???
Seems it depends on species, which I don't know.
Talking to various people it appears to be deciduous if left outside in UK and evergreen if kept inside!!!!
No one seems to be able to give me a definitive answer

I don't have a definitive answer either, Graham. I bought a nice chunky one from Corin at about this time last year. I kept it in my greenhouse over winter and it kept pretty much all of its foliage. At a point in the Spring that I deemed appropriate, I removed the greenhouse trees to outside, not wanting them to start into growth too early, meaning they would have to stay in there longer before the temperatures outside equalised.
The pistachio was lush when it went outside but within a very few weeks, the lower branches started to lose their leaves although the apex remained healthy and intact. To cut a long story short, it has recovered very well during the summer and has leaves on the previously bare branches.
My only explanation for this was that a spell of cooler weather after placing outside, caused the lower foliage to drop.
My pistachio is in my usual well draining media but does like regular water. It dislikes being very dry. Those of us who keep and love them need to exchange our experiences to help make them more popular.

Hi Gwen

I agree, I'm new to bonsai & liked the look of the pistachio & read its a good tree to experiment on. I was surprised when I posted the original question at the lack of replies. I like my little pistachio & thanks to your comments feel I have a better idea of what to do with him now over winter.

Yes - I've got one and had more (sold several of them).

Lovely trees, they are evergreen but they do still change all their leaves every year in late spring. You can defoliate them in spring also. Pyracanthas do the same, as do Chinese elms.

This is mine - photo from 2 weeks ago.
