Hi all, emboldened by a couple of successful hardwood cuttings this summer, I am eying up a few possibilities this winter. My eclectic hardwood shopping list for late winter is: Black Poplar Hawthorn Beech Hornbeam Dawn redwood Smoke tree 'royal purple' Golden Privet Would anyone advise against any of these on the basis of impossibility of success? I have the impression that surprisingly many trees will put up a good fight for survival against the odds, provided that the correct soil, sun & water are provided. Thanks. (Yes, air-layering may be better for these, but I haven't got the option in most cases) |

Hardwood cuttings are reputed to take best in Autumn. Softwood in Spring. |

I haven't had much success with winter hardwood cuttings for some reason. Lately I am taking more late summer cuttings like July-August, which seem to take quickly. With cuttings it is just a matter of taking more than you need and hoping some will take.... |

I'd like to know too, do you take all the still green leaves off and just leave the dormant buds? i took a load of Beech cuttings recently, i just shoved a few in the ground with the leaves still on, those leaves are now shriveling up, but by every leaf there is a dormant bud. ive some cuttings left i might stick in a pot, but tbh ive never had any luck with cuttings at any time of the year so not a big deal really! |

Out of sheer ignorance, I took three Hawthorne hardwood cuttings in June this year, and one of them seems to have rooted nicely, although it is deafinitely not vigerous yet. Final success can only be judged next year, if it lives & thrives in spring. So - definitely some luck needed! Willow hardwood cuttings seem pretty fool-proof at any time of year (100% success rate for me so far!), so I am hopeful for success with Poplar. |
