Hi all

Just looking for advice for when the temperatures start to drop at night. I have limited space in my garden & I was wondering if it would be worth getting a cold frame. I've become very attached to my little trees & want to obviously look after them. This will be my first winter with bonsai, so any advice would be great.

Thanks

Jason

Hi

The important thing is wind protection and keep the soil damp

I can't imagine the need for winter protection 'darn sarf' unless they're tropical. Mine don't get any in Yorkshire and they're up on the roof with Kenny Lynch.

I have a Chinese elm, Chinese privet & a pistachio.

Elm and privet will have no problem at all. I don't know about pistachio. The main problem I've had in the winter is high winds knocking over pots and breaking them. If your soil is very water retentive you might want to avoid them getting rained on too much but if it's free draining no problem at all. Mine all go through winter no problem except a Chinese Pepper which gets upset at -5C.

I'd have thought the Chinese privet would need protection too.

You're right of course but if things won't live here, I don't grow 'em.

I personally wouldnt leave a Chinese Elm outside, the only one i own (not by choice, it was donated to me by someone who lost interest) i bring indoors, leave it in the unheated porch unto spring. Reckon il be bringing it in sometime soon, maybe end of September.

My large elm stays out and my other elms always stay out until end of November :smallthumb:
