Hello, I need your help and advice please. My (attached) Chinese Elm is not looking so good, in the last two months, what was a strong healthy tree has turned into a very weak and leafless twig in a pot. There's been no growth for about a month now, all the leafs bar about 6 have fallen off and there doesn't seem to be any new buds at all. I repotted it about 4-6 months ago and used Focus Bonsai soil and it seemed to be doing ok. But I have noticed that the soil retains a lot of water. Is it worth me removing some of the soil and adding in some grit? Or is there an obvious issue i've missed. It lives outdoors. |

Don't mess around with the soil, just stop watering - the tree's not using any water. I'd just leave it outside in a fairly sheltered spot, not water unless it's completely dry (unlikely from now on) and basically wait and see. |

Sorry mate, it looks too late, but try following the advice I got earlier this year for my non-thriving Elm: viewtopic.php?f=5&t=13616 |

It should still be in full leaf now if it is healthy. Mine is still popping out new leaves early in September out on the patio. My first thought would be how much rootage did you remove when you repotted it? |

I just pulled it out the old pot and plopped it in the new one. I'll move it into my greenhouse to stop the rain from getting to it, and I'll see what happens. Will ensure it doesn't dry out, fingers crossed. This will also keep it warmer in the soon to be cold weather, so may give it a better chance? |

Considering it has virtually no leafs, does it still need light at the moment? Is your Elm still alive? |

Sven wrote: It needs light for any leaves and this is not just about light - cover it with plastic for a humid, wind-free environment. My Elm is bursting with health, and has been out of the cloche for 2 months. A few branches died, but there is enough vigour to prune back to a shape after leaf-fall. Thanks Sven, I've moved it to a 'grow house'. It's not in direct sunlight or at least whilst the sun is at its hottest but is nice and warm, it's also protected from winds as I'll keep the glass doors closed on the top level. I'll see how it goes, hopefully well, as it was a Christmas present from my Girlfriend. Definitely a lesson learnt! |

Can you see a slight wrinkling on the bark / twigs, indicating that the tissue has dessicated? If you have 2 Chinese elms and the other's healthy I'd take a few cuttings next year as a back up. Have a go at growing your own - you'll be surprised how fast they develop. |

Thanks Paul, I may just do that as I saw your post about the tree you grew from a neighbours cutting. Truly amazing! |
