It's getting close to pine plucking and pruning time. If I were to cut some of the needles, as in shorter and to tidy up the pads, would these die off or brown off at the tips

Cutting needles to get them shorter isn't advised. Needles shorten when ramification increases and this is achieved by pruning to encourage more twigs and side branches. If it's in development you want long needles - the tree will be much stronger as a result and you'll achieve you goal faster.

Always prune shoots and cut needles for balance - it's safer to cut rather than pull old needles as you risk damaging latent buds, unless of course they have yellowed and are about to shed themselves naturally. Cut older needles to a couple of mm's from the base - it will brown and die off at which point it can be removed.

Do you have a pic please so I can see the tree - it's much easier to give advice when you know the context?

Hi Paul
Photo attached
It was repotted this year and wired but has grown really well, under the surface it is packed with that nice mycelium, and there is a mass of crowded small branches that need thinning out, I suppose I take out the stronger ones in the apex is that right
This is my first JWP and looking forward to it
After the wires have set I will open up the trunk more and when I next repot intend to change the angle somewhat (it became evident after all the wiring)
Any advice welcome

Another question
The above JWP seems quite healthy, in fact the mycor....... Is growing so well around the roots, it seems to have formed a solid pack with the fresh acadama which is actually restricting water circulation, it just sits on top and takes a long time to penetrate
Has anyone come across this. Now I know it is supposed to be good for the tree especially JWP but this seems strange, is there something wrong or unbalanced?

If it starts to impede drainage I'd take steps to remove it - they'll be loads more in the soil. Just carefully scrape it off with the spatula side of a root rake or similar.
