Whenever I go walking, I automatically keep my eyes open for material suitable for bonsai development. Yesterday, during a good weather window (it's been very wet here for about 5 days), I went walking and came across 3 small stunted pines in a worked out quarry. Not being a 'pine man', I am unable to identify the species. Do any forum members have any idea what species they maybe and furthermore advise if they were worth collecting (at the appropriate time) as possible bonsai development material. Hopefully, I have attached 3 photographs:- 1) one of the stunted pines 2) a larger, young, non stunted pine of the same species 3) needles of the young, non stunted pine Looking forward to opinions. Young Pines can be very difficult to tell apart until they age a bit and start to develop their character. The best way, I would say, to identify, is to determine where they have come from. This means there must be some larger trees on the site which will drop its seed and this will be the same species. Pine seeds are very light and can blow a fair distance on the wind, so you need to scour the site and find the parents. If you want to collect, remember you need permission from the landowner. Its much easier to harvest the smaller specimens I find. Best collected in late winter to early spring. |

To help with identification, tell us how many needles they have in one bunch. http://www.exploringnature.org/graphics/tree_key.pdf |

Two needles doesn't really help because most of the common Pines are two needle. Scots, Austrian, Corsican, Lodgepole and several others are used for forestry and landscaping. These are all two needles. |
