Post subject:  Sap in xylem - not straight vertical rise??

Hi, I bought a maple (similar to Norwegian maple) stump about a month ago, and the seller chopped off the apparently dead top part of the stump for me. A rather crude diagonal chainsaw chop, not quite what I had in mind. There was minimal bleeding of sap.

Since then, some leaves on the two branches closest to the chop, one level with the chop and one about 100mm beneath, have gone a bit brown, typical of water starvation. The other branches are fine, so it is not just leaf burn.

It's almost like the sap flow has been disturbed by the chop. In which case, the sap flow through the xylem is not just a straight vertical line, but affected by the xylem to the sides and above the branch?? Any thoughts / experience about this?

This is not a critical issue, the tree will recover, but I'm curious. Good to learn lessons prior to carrying out trunk chops on other trees.

PS Just so no one worries, my own trunk chops will be rather more well-considered, with a sharp handsaw, straight across not diagonal, and carried out in very early spring.

It looks like the whole left hand side of the trunk in your second photo is dead. Notice the darker colour and cracking. It's only that upper branch on the right which is drawing sap and keeping the right hand side alive.

i think Peter is correct.

the chop may have caused the foliage on that branch to suffer because yes (especially with deciduous trees) branches can feed other branches and sap flow is not a simple straight down/up - to/from the roots. another reason may be it was suddenly exposed to more light and wind, as the higher portion of the tree was likely shading it before the chop. could be fungal attack, the other leaves look like they have a bit of it too, yellow patches starting e.g. along the leaf edges

Ok, I always learn more than expect when I ask questions on this forum! I was going to chop again below the top branch, and use the second from top (on right) as a new leader. Not looking promising now.

So, with a largely dead trunk, do I have any decent styling options left??

Thanks guys.

I guess I'll have to carve the majority of the trunk as deadwood, and try to grow som more branches lower down. Something like this? (Black outline = existing stump) (Need to practice my virtuals...!)

yeah you will just have to change plan and adapt to what the tree is now. i think its possible to use the dead side as front after a lot of growth, you could hollow it or just add some texture for character and have the callous rolling in around it eventually. someone on here has a lonicera with a big scar that looks great imo and i think something along those lines is an option with the wound as a feature.
