Hi all, I have the opportunity to dig up a blackthorn but it will have to be over the next couple of months, I know this is far from ideal but is it worth my while trying?
It stands alone and has a trunk of about 3 inches so I'm quite certain its not a sucker.
Thanks in advance!
Jonothan.

Definitely worth it. I had to rescue a smaller blackthorn at the beginning of July, and it's surviving and starting to thrive in a 20 litre pot.

Leave it as long as possible - after leaf fall would be much better.

leave it as late as possible and protect from frost/freezing until late spring.

Remember to use the bag / bin liner method for Blackthorn. It will greatly increase the chance of survival.

Peter, tell me more about the bag / bin liner method!!!
I am 'harvesting' two more Blackthorns this winter, and am all for minimising risks!
Thanks.

After potting and watering the trees, place them in a black bin liner for a week or two and place in a sheltered and shady spot. The darkness and humidity creates ideal conditions for root growth and recovery. Afterwards you can move them into a clear bag for a while and gradually open it up or create holes in the bag to reduce humidity. You can use this method for other species, but it's particularly recommended for Blackthorn, which is known to be difficult to keep alive after collection.
