Repotting in spring, there is a good website called bonsai4me which you can see all basic care for your trees. Well worth a look

Spring definitely, I do mine just as the buds are swelling.

It all depends on protection. Last year I went crazy and was repotting mine in Jan/Feb and all have been more than happy this year. Generally though as the buds start swelling is the best time... your tree will tell you when it needs repotting as it doesnt go by calendars

Is it OK to repot in early winter, esp if there in plant pots as opposed to bonsai pots, if given some frost protection? don't suppose anyone has tried it, but you have, with any species, would be interested, ta. rose

I repot mine at budswelling, when they become big and golden.
But make sure you do it before any green is visible.
This is how/what arihato taught me.
