Hi folks. Just been to my local Bonsai nursery (Green lawns owned by Dave Paget) and picked up a few new trees. I found a nice tree with quite a thick trunk the trouble is I don't know what it is! Dave seemed to think it was a Liquidamber but he wasn't 100% sure. The leaves seem maple like and the new shoots are red. Does anybody know what it is? I have tried Google and numerous I D sites but to no avail. Any help would be very much appreciated. https://www.dropbox.com/s/p0bx09al9jmlu ... 1.jpg?dl=0 https://www.dropbox.com/s/x1i9dtfiv3od9 ... 1.jpg?dl=0 https://www.dropbox.com/s/tuqoxro5urb1c ... 0.jpg?dl=0 https://www.dropbox.com/s/vhq3t7aqn2l5j ... 0.jpg?dl=0 |

The leaf lobes on the Liquidamber which I remember were much deeper indented and pointed. I believe that there are differing varieties. There are innumerable maples though. Can anyone else help Jamie? |

I can't tell you what it is but it's definitely not a liquidambar styraciflua the most common sweet gum. I have one and the leaves are not like this tree at all. As Don says they have much more defined lobes. |

Okay, so you don't know what variety it is. The nursery owner didn't even know what variety it is. How can you be sure that it is a species that is suitable for Bonsai if you cant be sure what species it is?.........But you bought it anyway? There is a simple way to determine a Liquidambar from a Maple and that is that the leaves on Maples are arranged oppositely. A liquidambar is alternative, like a Chinese Elm, for example. From the photos, yours looks like a Maple of some decription. |
