The consensus is Pines should be in a free draining soil and kept on the dry side.
Yesterday i discovered a tree nursery local to me and bought a 5-6yr old field grown Mugo pine, how is it pines are potted in poor drainage potting soil at nursery's, live in those pots several yrs and yet they thrive ?

Having researched Mugo pines, now's the time to repot, so how can i change the soil to a cat litter/river gravel mix without removing the Mycorrhizae and all the potting soil (not recommended ) ?

If i carefully remove the outside 1/3 of the potting soil, it'll still leave the center of the rootball in a poorly draining soil in wet weather, what's the solution  , as all my tree's Have to live outside with no protection from rain when i,m away for a month or 2 in winter

Regards Simon

The usual advice here is to replace 1/4 of soil in the central mass at each re-potting so it could take 4 years to complete this. By changing only a quarter at a time you stress the tree much less.

I've not done this myself yet still being fairly new to this but I do have a few trees that I'll be taking down this path at the next re-potting.

1. If you leave part of the rootball in tact (and the conditions are right) the mycorrhiza will spread to the newly repotted area in time.

2. My advice over Winter then is do what Don does and create at least partial protection from rain, eg under a slatted surface or covering some of the soil surface. How much you cover is dependent on variable local weather conditions.

I also add extra mycorrhiza to my trees when I repot just to make sure its there and to give my trees the helping hand they may need following a repot. You can buy it in packets from garden nurseries etc and you just sprinkle it directly onto the roots before you encase them in the new soil.
