| Post subject: | Red pine field growing - Brown/Yellow needles |
Hi Guy's I have planted a Japanese Red Pine in the ground in a friend's garden approx 1 year and 6 months ago. It has been very healthy until lately. I noticed last week it slowly starting to lose its bright green needles, slowly turning discolored yellow color. As of today it is still a yellow color going brown It is planted in the ground in a border which soil I improved with horticultural grit, sand and soil before I planted it. It also gets full sun most of the day. I am in south central location of the uk. The weather has been very warm lately with very hot days and quite a bit of rain. I'm not due to go back to my friends till wednesday next week. I hope I can catch it in time. The center needles are still a yellowing color with brown needles at the crown. The whole of the pine is a yellowing brownish color. There is a chance it could be root rot. I had put a plastic bag below the pine before I planted it, so the roots would spread out and not down. What should I do? Should I pull it out and plant in a container to be left in a green house? Should I improve the soil and see how it goes? P.S I cannot add pictures i have no camera. Warmest Regards. |

Only thing that concerns me is the plastic Below?.... Is that holding on to puddled water therefore the roots sitting in water all the time ? Good luck |

My Thoughts echo those of Will. Pines in general are happier in comparatively dry conditions. The drainage may have been interfered with by the plastic, the use of which was a good idea originally. |

All Pines do better if kept on the dry side. As usual, some photos would be helpful to diagnose. It could be that it is natural needle shed, which happens in late summer, and autumn. Plastic bags are a bad idea.......... |

Thanks for the feedback gentlemen. The whole of the pine is a dark yellow going brown color including the needles on the newest growth, im not sure that its old needle shed I have seen that before on this pine. What is the plan? Do I try to remove the plastic bag? Shall I take the pine carefully out of the ground without damaging the roots to plant in a large container and leave it In a greenhouse? The latter could pose a risk in itself considering the health of the pine and the time of year.. |

I wouldn't be keen on putting a pine in a greenhouse at any time. Try to remove the plastic with as little disturbance of the roots as possible and leave the tree there. Consider planting over a slate if and when it recovers. |

that sounds doomed to me tbh. i don't grow reds but do grow scots and mugo and once a needle turns yellow it will eventually go brown and fall, or just fall, so if the whole tree is yellow-brown i don't see it coming back from that. i would investigate and try to find out what went wrong though, the plastic could well be the problem. you could replace it with a scottie, it will do far better in the climate and they are lovely trees too. |

I have a small red pine in a bonsai pot. It tolerates dryness very well and I've never had any needle yellowing or browning. I do seem to remember Steve Tolley telling me at some time that red pine dislike having their foliage 'messed' with and can drop their needles as a result. I have recently wired mine and it seems OK (fingers crossed). I would hazard that the plastic is the problem. Personally I don't see much advantage in trying to 'field' grow these. They certainly react differently to the majority of pines grown as bonsai. |
