Post subject:  CAT LITTER GRANULE SIZE

I have Tesco LW cat litter, which has very small granules, does the Sanicat pink have larger granules ? PaulPash

I ask this because the deciduous trees at the next repot will be put in the Tesco's LW to retain more moisture (my climates mostly hot & dry), and need something free'r draining for my Pines & Junipers.
Using a larger granule should prevent over saturating the evergreen tree's by my drip system ,when i,m away.

I also intend to take the deciduous trees out of pond basket's as i lost a Larch through the cat litter drying too quickly, yet 2 of my trees in plastic nursery pot's have had the strongest growth this season.

Yes Sophisticat pink average granule size is 5mm-6mm and great for Pines but myself put a bit of fine pine bark in the mix about 5-10% and same for pumice.

Sophisticat pink was/is made from Danish molar clay. Isn't Sanicat a name for several different products, clumping and non-clumping? I would look for the Sanicat pink label.

I have taken to using Molar clay which is sold specifically as a planting medium. This is free from additives and is no more expensive because of having the Bonsai usage label.

The Tesco product seems to be ideal for mame and small pots. It may not be good to mix with larger sized granules according to the comments in another thread.

Yes, Sanicat has larger particles than Tesco. Only a small amount of organics is mixed in to encourage mycelium to grow (5 -10% by volume - I have about 5% mixed in with a mugo and it's got strong budding this year). It's very difficult to recommend a universal mix because there are numerous changeable factors that can really change its suitability. I'd recommend 'living' with whatever mix you go for and getting to know approximately when it needs watering before you let the drip system take over.

Sanicat and most moler granules do hold a fair degree of water so scratching a cm or 2 under the surface is advised (the surface will go light pink on most summer days in 24 hours where I live). White Pines I often skip a day whereas scots and mugo seem to like it a bit moister.
