I agree with Tom. It's quite common and not a problem.

Thanks - the plant doesn't seem to be suffering, so I am happy to chill about it. |

I think you can wipe them off with damp cloth, it's a kind of salt. Have you been misting them with water |

You are overwatering them, I'll bet. These are desert plants and actually do far better if you let them completely dry out every now and then. Generally then want only a splash of water but plenty of light - as much as you can possibly give them. Direct sun outside all day in summer and in winter a very bright window. I see you are in Oxford - hard to very hard water in those parts explains the residue. |

Ok, all makes sense, thanks guys. I used to keep them too dry, but now I'm keeping them too wet...! I'll get there. |

yep its the tree expelling excess salts etc which is taken up in the water you are giving it. Mine does the same if i use 'straight out the tap' water but it has no further adverse effects. As Brendan says, they handle and like dry conditions on a regular basis and mine often get forgotten because of this. It's only when I notice that the leaves have started to shrivel a little bit that I realise I havent given them water for a while. Once I water them all the leaves fill up again and it returns to it's former health. Mine may just be a freak but it deals with my forgettfulness better than I do |
