Post subject:  Help with species ID

Hi - I have had this conifer for a few years now. However, I am not sure what it is.

I would be grateful for any ideas as to what it is. ::dunno:

I will add another photo in a subsequent post as I am also not sure how you can do multiple copies from Photobucket

Hope this helps a bit David, if you copy the img and paste it to your post the photo should appear. As for ID I would guess at a Juniper of some kind but I'm usually wrong. Someone will come along soon with a better idea I'm sure :201thumbup:

Looks a bit like Juniperus sabina Tamariscifolia - one of the first junis I ever bought. They are nowhere near as tight as shimpaku or blauww so you have to accept their airy appearance.

Keith - thanks for that I will give it a try.

Paul - thanks for confirming its a juni. Having grown it for some years now I was starting to fear it was a cypress because of its 'airy' nature and none dense foliage. It was a homebase end of season buy but clearly I lost the label.

The power of Wee Trees !

Many thanks. :Big Thumb:

It would be useful to see the full shrub, as this could give more indication of the species. My first thought was Cupressus of some description, but there are many different Juniper cultivars which it may be. Cupressus tend to grow upright and tall, whereas most Junipers tend to be either sprawling or semi-upright, the shoots seldom grow vertically.

Nick - good point - here is the tree and a close up of the bark at the trunk base.

Tree stands at about a metre.

I don't know what it is but it looks like a nice bit of material.

Okay, well I would go with Cupressus, maybe Monterey or Italian. It is tall and grows upwards.

It looks like quite a nice piece of material. Maybe a good wiring session could have it looking something like. The bark is attractive.

You don't see many as Bonsai but I remember Graham Potter doing a video on a Cupressus which turned out nice.

OK - thanks to all with your help with my post. What I would also say is that it airlayers and cuttings take well.

I am going to get make it a project and will update in due course - especially now I know how to use Photobucket.
