| Post subject: | Juniper back budding advice please |
Ive owned a Juniper for a good few years now. Ive been hoping that this year i would see some back-budding as i was unhappy with parts of the tree. The good news is that it seems to be sprouting out new growth where i want it to, all over the place to be honest, but the bad news is that other parts of the tree seems to be drying, then dieing off. Would this be because of back budding by any chance?, taking energy away from the further out branches? or disease i wonder?? Tree was fine the last few years, its in the correct soil, gets the right amount of sunlight and water. I have removed the fertilizer pellets as a precaution. A few pics, you can see new growth and dried out branches. Any advice or links would be appreciated, thanks |

I think it's probably just old growth, google juniper pinch or don't pinch for some good info. |

Hi Sean. Can you post a pic of some entire pads and one of the whole tree? Assessing health is easy once you can see runner length (provided you've not snipped them off, of course). |

My Juniper has been doing the same thing. Although mine took a leap off its bench about 6 weeks ago so I'm not sure if mine sustained some root damage when it landed on the ground. |

Hi Paul ,thanks again for your assistance, much appreciated. I have been pinching of the new shoots, not all, but most. I was going to wait until autumn to wire the tree, but i suppose i can do that now. I see what you mean about the top of the tree, it does need to thin out more than the rest of the tree, hopefully then will send less energy up top and more down below:) Thanks for uploading pics of your project, a good reference, makes understanding that much clearer, be good to see how it comes on over the next few years Cheers. |

After you style and thin let the tree make LOTS of growth all through next summer so (healthy) neglect - FULL sun and lots of fert every 10 days. Don't pinch (you should never pinch junis btw - just cut the runners). Get your tree looking like my raw stock tree with runners and you'll see the pads get stronger and denser. Then come in late July and cut the runners. Clear and simple vid: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=efys8WUm7YQ |
