Hi all, I have a problem with a Japanese White Pine, I have had for three years. In the last few weeks, the moss surface is covered in black jelly like shiny round blobs. What's causing this and how to cure it. Many thanks for any help and advice. Iqbal |

Generally, its not a good idea to keep moss a Bonsai all year round. Yes, it looks cool, and is often used when exhibiting trees, but it can also encourage pests such as leatherjackets and vine weevils. They will hide underneath the layer and nibble roots. The blobs could be eggs or something. I would scrape the whole surface away. Also, it could be that you are over-watering. Pines can be kept a bit dryer than other trees and should be left to dry out between waterings. You just got to watch for drooping on any long extensions. |

Hi Iqbal I had a similar problem last year on my Gingko. I assumed it was some sort of eggs, looked like caviar. The tree had not been repotted for a couple of years and it was too late when I got it.It was in Akadama which had turned to mush and the top was covered in moss and weeds. I repotted this year in cat litter and it's fine, still has a bit of moss which I am removing but no sign of those egg things.Whatever it was didn't do the tree any harm Cheers Mo

I have looked up on the internet and not sure to do. I intend to remove the moss and scrap it off the surface. Is there any thing else I should be doing ? |

i think it's harmless, though maybe a sign the pot is too wet. |

Thanks Tom and every one for you help and contribution. Its the first time I have used this section and you all are extremely friendly and helpful. I was very worried and can now relax, check on the watering and keep an eye on the tree. |

White Pines like it quite dry. Wilted weed dry. If moss is on the surface you're watering too much. I've moved my white pine so it can't be watered by the hose. I have been watering it 2 or 3 times a week (as opposed to every day last year) and there are roots coming through the pond basket and mycelium is visible. Mycelium does best a bit on the dry side too - you'll not see much on a permanently damp mix. White Pines really benefit from an umbrella in Winter and minimal wetness. |
