Its nothing to worry about, Chinese elm often drop old leaves in summer, some of mine are doing the same. sometimes the yellowing leaves that drop freely can also be a sign of over watering.

ah fair enough, over watering you say? I'll experiment with slightly reducing the water. It does seem to seem a little odd though as it appears to be losing more leaves than its pushing out, especially compared to its neighbour. I guess all trees have their own different personalities you discover over time. |

I've noticed a couple with mine, with the terrible weather this year we've been getting in Glasgow I'm going to keep it inside until next year. I've noticed a few yellow leaves though not many and seems to be acclimatizing well as is throwing out some nice new growth (needs a trim actually!). I'll keep a tight rein on watering though hasn't been too many to cause concern |

I'm not subscribing to the over-watering theory. It occurs quite naturally to many species around now. Leaves are shut off to make room for new ones. I have noticed it additionally on my Nothofagus antarctica over the last two weeks. Worry ye not. |

All of mine stay out doors over winter they loose leaves and regrow like ever other tree I have if its really cold it's under the bench ect |

Hi I don't think you have anything to worry about but the one thing I would do is check your soil a lot of these trees come into this country in a heavy clay soil and some dealers clear the surface of the soil then put a top dressing on to sell the tree so if you find the tree is in clay wait for Spring and change all the soil by gently washing the roots in a bucket of water and repot with a soil that has good drainage. |

I know Will, I'll move it out next year once I have somewhere for it in my garden. Just moved into a new house so need to sort out a spot out of the ferocious winds (worst summer ever). |
