Hi Mick. Your ficus will need more frequent watering to keep the planting medium just moist at all times. It will be best outside at the moment but when night temperatures drop below 8C it may need a little shelter in an unheated room. Perhaps at the end of September. The baby-bio will do no harm but make that no more frequent than twice a month. Keep in touch, tell us all about your care and ask anything which occurs to you. |

Welcome to the forum Mick Sorry but Ficus aren't one of my favorite trees, as all of mine stay outdoors all year. These may interest you, and there are loads of photos put on there by my friend. Your tree will need winter care at a decent temperature or else they drop all their leaves http://swindon-bonsai.co.uk/2014/03/13/ficus-fantastic/ http://swindon-bonsai.co.uk/2012/12/22/ ... anyan-fig/ http://swindon-bonsai.co.uk/2015/04/10/ ... nk-bonsai/ |

Welcome to the forum Mick, I see I'm not the only noob who ended up with one of the Aldi Ficus (technically my dad bought it, but hey still me who ends up caring for it I pretty much got most my info from this link, but I've been researching on the web quite heavy for the last few months as well: http://www.bonsaiempire.com/tree-species/ficus Main thing to be careful of is that Ficus are POISONOUS TO PETS! , so keep it clear of things that don't live in pots (I'm assuming you're quite sane, and that you don't stuff cats in jars, but this is the internet I'm currently watering ours once a day (skipping a day if it isn't too sunny or windy - wind can dry the soil as well). I keep ours in full sun throughout the day. Some naruko 5:5:5 organic feed should be fine for now, but you might want to switch to another fertilizer that doesn't encourage as much leaf/fruit growth from August onwards, and only focus on roots with some bonemeal over the winter months, cutting back on watering as well (I could be wrong here so hopefully someone could help verify?) The plastic pots that Aldi kept them in aren't great, So you'll probably want to give it a root prune and a repot toward the end of Next March/Beginning of April For the winter care (it's a tropical species), I think ficus can be moved indoors without many complications over the cold seasons, do this gradually though over the next month, sticking it straight into the house from the garden might be more shock than it could handle, a couple of days at first, then back to the garden, repeat and make each indoor spell longer until you're satisfied it will cope. A south facing window should suffice (make sure there isn't a draft), a water tray filled with gravel to keep the humidity up and watered whenever the soil drys out. Remember to turn the tree every couple of days to avoid scorching leaves, and uneven growth. Or You can purchase/build a small cold storage/polytunnel/cloche/mini-greenhouse. Buy a humidty/temerature gauge (a couple of £'s on ebay) and monitor the temp and humidity. Plenty of info out there on overwintering and you can check out the build I'm currently working on in the forum. Take any advice I've given with a pinch of salt, I've only been getting into bonsai since May, so I can only go on what I've researched and believe to be correct. Really hope I haven't given any false info, and good luck with the ficus! I'll keep you updated with progress on mine, and post some images asap. Sorry for the wall of text, just trying to be helpful |
