What fertilizers do you recommend for the autumn? A book suggests NPk 0-10-10 but can't find such a feed to buy. Been useing chempak bonsai feed this year, value 10-30-30, great results so far but too much nitrogen for the autumn? Have some cactus feed at 8-34-32 shall I use that? Does anybody add extra potassium from another source? Thanks for any thoughts. Rose |

Modern practice is to use a balanced fertiliser all year round. A plant will take whatever it needs and reject the rest. The practice of using low nitrogen fertiliser in autumn is now considered to be rather pointless. Walter Pall Quote: It seems to be a bonsai myth that trees grow in fall because of high nitrogen dose. This used to be gardeners wisdom. Modern research has shown that plants take whatever they need at a certain time and leave the rest. So you can throw as much nitrogen at trees as you like. They will only take what they need. It is true that they need less in fall. But so what, the rest is washed out.

Kaizen also market a nil nitrates feed if you're still interested Rose. I never use anything other than Tomorite all year round as necessary, which isn't very much in my case. Many books are being outdated with new facts coming to light all the time. That's where weetrees shines because we change rather than stagnate. |

If you think about it trees growing in the ground have the same level of nutrients all year round. Trees have evolved to know when to stop lush growth and start the hardening off process so why would it be any different in a pot. |

Agree this is a very usefull website, thanks everyone :) Useful thoughts, will just keep useing the feed I have this year and perhaps adapt it another time, might try some seaweed type feed next year on the young trees for speedy growth. Haven't really thought much about it before, cast the odd bit of cheap tomarto feed about and that's about it, some of the old plants I have don't really look there age, a bit stunted really. The feed I gave this year has really perked them up, the larches esp' look really chunky. I don't have ideal conditions for the trees so they need a bit of feed to get them though the stresses. Added some Magnesium Bicarbonate to the weekly feed as some plants where looking quite yellow, will see if that helps. Does anybody add more potassium to get thick old looking trees faster or is that not how it works? |

Conifers: Ericaceous feed in their water. Deciduous: Tomato feed in their water. Everybody: about 3 times a year: Seaweed as substitute for both the above. The seaweed is just to make sure they all have a change and get trace elements. But it's really to satisfy me that I'm doing all I can. J. |

I just bought a 3.5kg tub of Jack's Magic fertiliser for £5 in Asda (was in the clearance section). NPK is 6-8-12. Has anyone else used it for bonsai? |

Just check it also has trace elements like magnesium, zinc etc. If not then consider the chempak balanced feed as this contains trace elements. I often buy cheap deals like yourself and rotate their use. I fertilise every 10 — 14 days. |
