Hi All I am a new member and new to the world of bonsai. I've been given a tree as a present. The label said it was a Japanese Holly. I'm just looking for advice re pruning really as all of the advice I've read talks about pruning new growth but not about major pruning. I will try to attach a pic of my tree below so that I can explain it better. It looks to me like some of the smaller, lower branches should be taken off but I am wary of doing anything too major and, if I do, doing it at the wrong time. Can anyone advise me? Thanks FJ |

These are woodland bushes so dappled sunlight outside during our Summer suits them. Heavy pruning is best done in Autumn or early Spring before new growth starts. Trunk and older branch bark is thick and fleshy, so heavy pruning causes large pruning scars to form large swelling. To avoid this ugly swelling, hollow out large wounds so tissue can fill the hollow making scars less noticeable. There are evergreen and deciduous varieties. do you know which one you have FJ? |

Thanks for the reply and the advice. When you say "hollow out large wounds" what would be best to use to do this and how deep do I need to go? I'm not sure if it is evergreen or not - I've only had it a few months. thanks FJ |

A concave branch cutter will do this automatically. If you don't have one use a curved gouge to go in about twice the thickness of the bark making sure that the final cuts in the bark are smooth and clean. Many people prefer to seal wounds with a proprietary product. Petroleum jelly will do this job too. |

I would say that is the evergreen variety, it is hardy here. It has tin white flowers, but will not set fruit without a male plant, and they are not easy to find. |
