Probably better than a book as they get outdated http://www.bonsai4me.co.uk/ Put anything or any tree species into the search box and there is loads of helpful info for you |

I'd add in a few blogs here - great learning resource https://nebaribonsai.wordpress.com/ https://bonsaial.wordpress.com/ http://bonsaitonight.com/ A picture speaks a 1000 words : Walter Pall's gallery has literally hundreds of high quality pics. http://walter-pall.de/ It has broadleaf (1) and conifer (2) galleries |

For current and relevant advice look to the internet. This forum is probably the best. But for inspiration a book is wonderful. I would really urge you to read Colin Lewis' The Art of Bonsai Design. It is dated, relatively small in scope, but there is nothing finer to take you through the artistic and horticultural journey of a successful transformation from raw material to bonsai. For a visual feast get Amy Liang's The Living Art of Bonsai. |

Like others have said the internet is a wealth of knowledge. But I do like finding and reading the odd book as I get a bit bored of too much screen reading. Although it is wise to read up from different sources/perspectives as books can become dated fast. For example the topic on soil is such a can of worms. Over the past year I have found and read quite a few books and some really stood out (to my amateur mind), so here they are. Ken Norman: Growing Bonsai A Practical Encyclopedia. It's a complete guide and contains pretty much everything you'll need including step by step projects and essential techniques. It also boasts over 800 pictures! Whenever I search bonsai what I'm mainly searching for is pictures for inspiration and this book has that in heaps and bounds. Werner M. Busch: Bonsai from Native Trees & Shrubs. This one stood out for me as I think its interesting creating bonsai's from native European species as the whole Japanese import market can be quite intimidating for someone new to bonsai. The bulk of the book contains examples of 30 trees over 92 pages. If you're just looking for a little hand book; pretty basic but ticks most boxes I recommend either Colin Lewis: Bonsai Basics or Jon Ardle: Bonsai (RHS Wisley Handbooks). The only thing these little books lack are the tree directory chapters. I'm often checking out my local Oxfam book shop for bonsai books and the most I've spent on a single book was £3. Well worth a look. |

Hi, I'd say it's best to follow books' and stories on bonsai that hail from your own part of the country. Follow with a little caution stories from elsewhere in your country. Follow with great caution stories from similar climates around the world. Any books' and stories from foreign countries with very different climates, well, the illustrations and photographs are good for inspiration but almost everything in them won't work for you. |
