Hi, anyone know what this is? 2 of em self seeded here last year. looks quite like malus but im not too familiar with those. the big bud scales are clinging on and seem quite distinctive. leaf size is about 1" to 1.5".

They look more like plum to me.

thanks Alain. i thought plums have glands at the base of the leaf? ::dunno: i can't see any on this, if that might help narrow it down

still looking for an ID on these, i think they could be alnus cordata after i noticed that they are planted along the river, a couple of miles away from where they seeded. the leaves look and feel right but im still not sure because of the twigs, as they do not look exactly the same on the mature ones. thinking this might be down to age?
Jerry, i think i have only seen you mention the species on here... what do you think? or anyone else grow them and able to say yay or nay?
heres a fresh pic

Looks a bit like wild pear, Pyrus communis.

thanks Tom. it looks a bit like a lot of species but there is a conspicuous bifurcation about halfway along the 3rd pair of leaf veins, which seem to be on the italian alder and not many similar looking leaves, e.g. on the pear leaf there are a lot more veins and it looks like they run almost right out to the edge.
