Does anyone have any experience of Eleagnus as bonsai? My mother has asked me to remove a fair sized Eleagnus from her garden and I gather some varieties are suitable for bonsai so any advice would be appreciated. |

i don't have any experience with them but you can find pics of some quite nice ones searching around. they seem to get pretty good trunk bark. not the daintiest leaves or twigs though so id aim to keep it big. |

Yes, one of my club buddies has a very nice one and I am growing one in the open ground in preparation. Some varieties are better than others for our purpose. Here's a link for info. http://www.stevetolleybonsai.com/eliagnus/ |

Thanks Bill and Don. The tree in the images looks a very similar variety. There seem to some quite good Eleagnus bonsai around when you look. Not sure how large the trunk is on Mum's plant. I'll investigate further at the weekend. |

If it's not big don't bother, as I found the leaf reduction is almost impossible and the growing habit is to send out quite straight, brittle runners. But they are quite tough, just don't let the roots stay in too wet soil for too long. I lost one from a hedge and I think it was because the pot it went into did not drain well enough and I was unsing soil that retained too much water. |

That's rather a pretty one with the red fruit Gwen. Was it one of Steve Tolleys by any chance? I've a long way to go with my stump but it seems willing. |

That looks like the One I had . Although it is hedge material and tough I recommend at least 2 Seasons of unchecked growth B4 you start any work. I found that for a year it was Living off reserves in the trunk. Only in Y 2 when the reserves ran out did it struggle aand die. You have put it Into a proper medium so I am sure you will get a better result. Good luck! |
