Post subject:  Newbie Questions

Hi again everyone, I have a few questions to ask and any answers are most welcome.

I'm a total newbie to bonsai but have admired them and the skill involved with keeping them for a long time but have always been reluctant to take the plunge. I now find myself unable to resist the urge so want to get stuck in. I've read lots of stuff on the internet and studied many videos but to be honest I've always found the best way of learning is doing.

So to make sure I start on the right foot I thought I'd ask the experts, so to speak

Anyway, here goes:

1) Are there any good places to buy bonsai trees and tools etc in or around Liverpool?
2) What trees are best for the beginner?
3) Are there any bonsai clubs or classes local to me?
4) What tools etc do you think are a must to have as a 'starter kit'?
5) What advice would you give to a total novice?

You probably get asked these questions all the time so I apologise for my lack of knowledge and look forward to reading your replies

Thanks a lot

Fletch

To answer question 1. and 2. you need to contact your local club............it is probably 'Wirral' but I have already posted a map with all clubs on it. just pick the one nearest to you.

I know that the Wirral club have a great programme of events and workshops. They will be able to tell you where is the best place to get your bonsai items. They may even run some local tree collections from the wild..........called Yamadori

Some trees are better than others, anything with a small leaf is good, chinese elms, cotoneaster, pyracantha, elms to name a few... I would avoid Yew [they are very slow] pines, maples, juniper, azalea they all need quite a lot of work

Don't rush in on a kit, most of the things in it you won't use............. someone at the club will let you use theirs for now, and then you can get a feel for them, then you can buy a better quality tool every now and again to build up your own kit.

There is also a post on here relating to good advise for the newbie. I would say find a good club and learn a lot BEFORE spending a lot of money on a decent tree.

Oh,.............and also ask all these questions, then we can try and help you get the most out of this hobby

Hi Paul B and Stymie, thanks for the reply, I will get in touch with Ian today.

To be honest, I don't mind a tree that needs more work, in fact I would prefer it as it gives me more opportunity to practice and learn and I have plenty of time on my hands at the moment, but I would prefer a tree that is not particularly difficult to keep alive.

I suppose you could say, diffucult to keep looking good but easy to keep alive.

I would also prefer an indoor tree to start with as although I have a large garden it is in terrible condition at the moment and i wouldn't get a chance to enjoy my new tree.

Hi mate, go to garden centers, you can sometimes pick up bargains. Family run garden centers are better than the big chains. They are more likely to have old stock. You can pay very little for a tree and do what you like to it without the fear of losing ££s. Good luck. :smallthumb:

Holy topic resurrection!

I was going to post a new topic asking if anyone had experience of Wyndcote when I decided to use the search feature first, but the above post was all that came up.

Has anyone else got anything to add to the above post please?
