I spotted a building contractor pulling a large privet out of the ground with their truck last week! I just had to go over the road, with wheelbarrow and loppers, and explain why I wanted to rescue them. Imagine the scene.... "you want them for what"?
Anyone else been there?

Back in the old days when I used to work here in Swindon, I used to meet some of the Japanese workers from the big Honda factory.

In conversation I would say that I would love to visit their country as I had an interest in Bonsai.....they used to look at me with a very blank expression, as if I was talking another language, the hobby isn't as wide spread over there as we would think...... :32crazy:

They often had no idea what I was on about..... :20help:

There are still a lot of people out there in this big old world that have no idea what or how we do the Art.

Last week a local farmer destroyed a 200 yard row of old Hawthorn hedging. With a jcb.
When I stopped to ask if I could have some he hasn't dug yet, he replied.....
Gerroff moy larnd! Grow your own ya fool!...

What can I say to that? "I'm still trying?"
I guess he was having a bad day!

Paul - it's the same with the Japanese and koi. Most Japanese regard koi (which is Japanese for carp) as something to eat. They see no reason to keep them in ponds at your house.

Last year I was on my way to work and saw some workmen ripping out part of an old hedge to create a new field entrance. They basically drove a bulldozer through the hedge, pushing the spoil ahead of them to fill the ditch.
I screeched to a halt and asked if I could pull out some of the bits of hedge out of the pile. I am sure they thought I was mad, but had no objections. So while they had a cup of tea I had a rummage through the devastation and managed to pull out six trunks with reasonable amounts of root. The full story is on my blog

I'm permanantly on the look out for this type of thing and never see it, in my job every 3-4 months we move onto to another old house to renovate and the first thing I do is check the gardens for anything to use, nothing as yet :1crybaby:
