OK ... Help required. About a year ago i read a post up here (might have been Mikey but I'm not sure) describing a visit to a ( non Bonsai ) tree nursery with a huge selection of Acers. I think I remember the location as New Forest, but I'M BEGGERED if I can find the post or locate it through Google.

As part of this years work on the garden we want to buy a really distinctive Acer to add to our collection and I know that I need a really good tree nursery rather than a garden centre, but Google hasn't helped so far. I'm West Midlands based but this tree requirement will see us travel several hours each way so Hampshire to North Yorkshire and Welsh borders to the Wash are all within bounds (but not inside the dreaded M25 area.. I'm not that "Time Rich" ... )

Your suggestions would really help, especially with something I can Google and check out before I travel too far. Thing is, the more I indulge Mrs Talltreess's love of Acers and the more I landscape the Oriental half of the garden, the more time and money I'm allowed to spend Bonsai wise...

:cool.:

There is a good tree nursery near me, they have great beech and Larch, but only ever saw about 20 acer, and none too big.....
What size are you looking for?
They had some that were about 4 to 5 feet

I suggest taking the ferry to Holland for a weekend and buying one cheap at the growers in Boskoop. Not only are there vast commercial growers, with stuff 1/4 the price of the UK, there is also Esveld - the largest Acer nursery in the world (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Esveld_Aceretum).

These UK nurseries will be buying them in from Boskoop in the first place.

Lodder bonsai is only 20 miles from Boskoop and both are only 20 miles from Amsterdam.

Daniel. the type of tree I think she needs for the corner I have to landscape would be large to huge... either in height or spread within a 2-3 year time scale. What I've seen in garden centres previously are £400-600 and I don't need that sort of a bill. But more importantly I want the specialist advice on species / climate / sun tolerance / ongoing care etc that you just don't get from the general garden centre. (tea and Pee stops)

thanks Jerry... Boskoop turned up in one of Mrs TT's books.. might even be a possibilty...so have you room for two overnight guests, in a transit , with a huge Acer on the back .....?

Smithy... great link thanks. I ahve a brother living in Hampshire so could make a weekend of that one. though they do claim to have an on line mail order .. i'll have a browse tomorrow and see if anything comes up.

keep the suggestions coming guys and gals

Pantiles in Chertsey. Just plucked that from the depths of my brain. Acres of mature trees, all in huge pots including acers. Not cheap though.
Just found them on t'internet - http://www.pantiles-nurseries.co.uk/
I've been there a couple of times when I was into palms and bamboos.
And this is their availability on acers! http://www.pantiles-nurseries.co.uk/pla ... /Acers.pdf

thats the one in teh new forest

pantiles is expensive - but then mature trees always are

We have quite a few palmatums that have "got away " from us up the field that we will be digging this spring, unless you want a specific cultivar they might be worth you taking a look at if you are passing

Jerry is right, boskoop would be the best place to go

Many thanks all you lovely people, that's given me loads to research.

All I need to do now is sort out the what when and how, and dig the corner out, (Currently listening to "her who is loved" banging on about cultivars suitable for full sun, but I'm sure all the advice will lead somewhere positive.)
