Hello boys and girls,

My name is jamie, 21, and im from Hampshire.

When i was... 10? Something like that i was bought a bonsai tree for my birthday. Loved it to bits but didnt really know what i was doing. I suspect remote control cars and playstation one games took priority! Anyway ive always had a soft spot for bonsai trees and after looking at seed online, etc i decided id take the guides ive seen and get a "shrub" to learn the basics on before launching into full on specalist species. (a long way off from now!)

So after reading lots of guides i popped out to the garden centre up the road from work on my lunch break in search of a shrub i could learn to craft into a bonsai. After walking up and down aslies not finding what i had a mental picture of i spotted an Escallonia Edinesis. It had a funky lean on the go for the trunk, a nice defined trunk and the small leaves looked perfect for a "miniture tree" creation i could attempt to turn into a bonsai.

It looked a tad wild as you can see! (nearly had my eye out sevral times!)

So after watching some video's online and the general theme being these are tuff little buggers i gave it a good proper "prune" when i say this i got some nail scissors and a pair of secuters out and had a go. This is what i created!

I may well get beat down and told to go take a hike im doing it all wroung but hey i thought id at least give it a try, and tips to get my tree looking more "Bonsai" like or any other help would be great i know nothing

Welcome Jamie, and good for you for doing some reading first then getting some suitable material for 'having a go'. This might not be the best bonsai you ever own but it will always be special because it is the first in your learning adventure. My main comment, as far as styling goes, is that you will get a more 'bonsai' look if you aim for a triangular outline with the point at the top - yours is currently triangular but with the point at the bottom. Don't do anything too hasty, let it settle and grow back for a while, get used to what care it needs then when you have some re-growth you can start to trim it again into a better shape.

Use google images to look at other escallonia bonsai and get some more styling ideas. And keep asking questions - it's the best way to learn. :smallthumb:

Well, I would even go that far:

And repot it in a flat container as soon as we get back from Siberia to Atlantic Europe....

Hi,

Well done for not being afraid to having a go and being brave enough to show. Great advice from Daryl on giving it a rest.
Keep on turning it and having a look and try to find the best taper/ trunk movement. not always what we first see.
keep posting and all the best.

Darren

Hi Jamie
welcome to the best forum for all little tree stuff!

You may want to check out this site, its full of all you should know about bonsai from the basics up to the really advanced stuff

http://www.bonsai4me.com/

Also on your tree, have you checked how far underneath the soil the roots begin?
It's worth finding out because it may have a long trunk in there!
Just a thought....

Listen to the advice from these lot on here, its all good (we can be a bit weird sometimes though!)
:smile tree:
