Hia everyone, I had a bonsai a couple of years ago and it died, but now i have another (chineese elm, 2 years old, keep it indoor at about 18 degrees C) and have some questions to ask if thats alright

I water requlary but how do you know if you've over watered? and i spray the leaves with a mist sprayer everyday, is this a good idea?

1) is it worth repotting? or leave it for a while?
2) the leaves have started dropping off, is this a bad sign?

any advice would be greateful as i dont want this one to die! and sorry for all the questions

many thanks,
tom

Welcome Tom. Mist spraying is great, but won't be neccessary once the leaves drop. Agree with all the advice given if you have the time post some pictures up of your trees we love to see photos.

Hello and welcome,

How long have you had it for?

Assuming it is in free draining compost, the only way you can over water is if the pot stands for long periods of time with water up above the drainage holes.
Even then it could well take months for the roots to suffer. It is a far less common problem than people fear.

Spraying the leaves everyday will keep the leaves clean, which doesn't harm, but gives the tree very little usable water or humidity.

It may be worth repotting. Reasons to repot are to stop it getting potbound or to change the compost to something more suitable.
To decide it would help to know the history of the tree, how long you have had it, what compost it is in and how much bigger you want it to get.

Leaves can drop off for a number of reasons. Lower light levels, colder temperatures, getting too dry, the tree growing lots of new ones.
A moderate number dropping this time of year is quite common. So it depends how excessive it is. A picture and/or more information will help.

When a tree is indoors and STILL leaves are falling off - it's not normal and , as Paul (splendidplumage) mentioned can be caused by many things.
Probably a combination of insufficient light and insufficient water.

Welcome to weetrees Tom, as mentioned could be a few factors and until we see some pics it's a little hard to know what's exactly wrong. your post will be moderated for the first few so in the mean time get some photo's taken of the soil and some close ups of the leafs, also use the search option in the top right of the homescreen and type in chinese elm help and have a read through that. As has been said it's more than likely a lack of water or light. You may have been used to a certain watering regime and maybe a factor of having your heating on has dried the soil out quicker, or the cold getting to it through a draught or something. Try to get use to keeping your soil moist and not just watering to a schedule. Our Stymie aka Don has made a little write up in the " ABC of Bonsai " about Elms also Bonsai4me has some good literature on Elms too. Also the easiest wat to add a photo I've found is to create a flickr account and upload them on to there, look at your photo and there's a share button above it on the left, press that and copy the " BB " code, paste that code into your reply on weetrees and the photo will be within your reply ok.

I see he's edited his post to include the photos. That doesn't work well because it does not show up as a change. Comment on your own original post next time Tom.
Where are you keeping it? It needs to be next to a window when indoors.
How cold was it kept? It looks like trees I have which are outdoors.
